MEET JANE SHELTON
Bringing experience to the
St. Charles Public Library Board
As a lifelong reader and librarian with over 30 years of experience, I am deeply passionate about the power of libraries to transform lives. Born and raised in the Fox Valley, I grew up in a big family that loved to read. At 5, I got my first library card from the St. Charles Public Library. In college, I studied theater and pursued an acting career before discovering my true calling and going back to school to earn my Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Maryland in 1990.
I began my career with an internship at the library of the United States Supreme Court, followed by positions in law libraries for firms in Washington, D.C., and Chicago. In 2000, as a mom with young kids, I switched gears and joined the St. Charles Public Library as an Adult Services Librarian. For the next 24 years, I proudly served my community, sharing my love of learning, reading, and service until my retirement in March 2024.
Libraries have been my life’s work, and serving as a trustee is a continuation of my commitment to public service. I will bring my expertise, integrity, and dedication to ensure that our library remains an essential institution for generations to come.

ON THE ISSUES
Advocating for a
high-quality library for all
Access and Choice for All
Libraries are the cornerstone of a democratic society, offering everyone free and equal access to information, resources, and services. As a trustee, I will work to ensure that every visitor has access to a well-curated collection of books, technology, and resources that reflect the wide-ranging and diverse needs of our community. I believe in the freedom to read, learn, and explore ideas without censorship or barriers.
Responsible Stewardship of Taxpayer Dollars
As a steward of public resources, I am committed to ensuring that every taxpayer dollar is wisely and transparently allocated. My priorities will include:
-
Maintaining and enhancing the quality of the library’s collection to meet the evolving needs of the community.
-
Supporting the library staff—the heart of our institution—by advocating for competitive wages and training opportunities.
-
Advocating for modern, accessible facilities and technology while keeping budgets balanced and aligned with community priorities.
Anticensorship and Intellectual Freedom
In an era of increasing challenges to books and information, I stand firm in my belief that libraries should be a place where people of all viewpoints feel represented. I will advocate against censorship in any form and uphold the library’s role as a sanctuary for intellectual freedom. The library should be a space where everyone feels welcome to read, think, and grow.
Libraries as a Community Hub
Libraries are more than just buildings filled with books—they are vital community hubs that transform lives. Whether it’s providing access to the internet, hosting programs for all ages, or creating a safe and welcoming third space, I will work to ensure that our library remains:
-
A place where people of all ages can connect, learn, and grow.
-
An inclusive space for dialogue, curiosity, and lifelong learning.
-
A trusted institution that reflects and supports the fundamental health and vitality of our community.

The Library as a Source of Truth
In a time when misinformation spreads easily, libraries stand out as a trusted source of accurate and reliable information. I will support initiatives that promote media literacy, digital equity, and access to credible resources, ensuring that our community has the tools it needs to navigate the modern information landscape.
